Icebreaker - Merino Wool Clothing
Icebreaker produces a wonderful line of stylish merino wool long sleeve shirts, short sleeve shirts, zip turtleneck shirts, base layers, sweaters, jackets, hats, gloves, scarves and a full selection of merino socks. Icebreaker's commitment to sustainability is substantial. To start with, they have stringent supplier requirements. Their primary wool cleaning plant recycles its cleaning water, their spinning plant recycles heat, and their manufacturing plant uses environmentally-friendly dye. All manufacturing contractors are required to be working toward a global environmental assurance program, such as ISO 14001 and to consciously minimize environmental impact. Icebreaker's garment manufacturer, spinner, and sock manufacturer are all accredited to ISO 14001: 2004.
All of the cardboard that Icebreaker uses for packaging is either recycled or made from FSC certified fiber for sustainable forest management and all of their printing uses vegetable-based inks. Icebreaker has removed all plastic from their packaging for socks and greatly reduced cardboard and glue use in packaging. They use biodegradable vegetable-based garment bags instead of plastic bags.
Icebreaker fabrics are certified to Oeko-Tex standard 100, class 1, the highest attainable standard for textiles, which limits the use of harmful chemicals. All sheep stations that supply Icebreaker's merino wool are accredited by Zque for being ethically produced (non-mulesed) and with traceability back to the source.
In addition to all of the care Icebreaker takes with environmentally responsible production, they also primarily use wool in their products, which tests show to be fully biodegraded after nine months (compared to no degradation at all for the same period for polyester knit fabrics). Based in New Zealand with stores worldwide, Icebreaker products are also available for purchase online.
